		<description>Hi Robert,

I work for the Faculty of Translation and Interpreting at the Autonomous University of Barcelona and am doing research for an article on IPod and Iphone apps. I would be very grateful if you could explain or refer me to a ´For Dummies`expolanation of how the rankings for apps are worked out. For example, if you look at the article entitled ´ Top 10 language translation apps for iPad and iPhone`
http://www.inman.com/news/2011/06/10/top-10-language-translation-apps-ipad-and-iphone
the ranking system seems like a scam because the rating in the rankings are based on positions in other rankings named: Reference, Productivity, Travel etc.

The language is pretty convincing in a sort of ´pop charts` kind of way i.e. &quot; Translator up 1 to chart position number 4&quot;!! (see example below)
4.+1
Translator ~ translate with voice
Number 25 in Travel (+1 today)
Translates and speaks 53 languages on iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad. Features: ★ Quickly and easily translate words or sentences in 53 of the world&#039;s most spoken languages ★ S...

But(i) the ranking is invalid unless position number 25has the same worth as position 25 in Reference
(ii) how are positions established in the ´feeder`rankings such as Travel and Reference.

Thanks for reading this!
Steve
